All the hot grrrls are going to the protest, big updates, and the climate crisis

Dear Community,

This week has been all about creating, filming, and reimagining how we connect with you. We’re thrilled to share some exciting shifts for A Feminist Newsletter — About Urbanism (and beyond)!

Here’s what’s new:

1️⃣ Deeper Climate Crisis Focus: We’re doubling down on the intersection of feminism, urbanism, and the climate emergency. Expect sharper analysis, solutions-oriented stories, and a louder call for systemic change.

2️⃣ Video Takes Center Stage: We’re leaning into dynamic video content to bring urbanist stories to life—think documentaries, interviews, and on-the-ground dispatches. Hit “play” with us!

3️⃣ Community First: Remember the prosocial virtual town square project (Space is a means of production) I launched in 2020 during my MPA-Urban Planning program? That experiment in building collaborative, critical, feminist, pluralistic, radically integrated digital spaces is moving to the starting seat. We’ll share more soon about how you can engage!  But you can start by joining HERE.

You can also support us by becoming a paid member. We are 100% reader supported. We are so very thankful for our biggest donor (THANKS EVAN—gone above and beyond and we appreciate you) and our first PAID SUPPORTER (THANK YOU SULIMA—your membership has been upgraded) and ALL our readers who share OUR GROUP AND EMAIL with others. Also if you’ve donated and you shared your address a post card will be in the mail!

What’s staying the same?

🌆 Our feminist urbanism & riot grrrl roots.

✊ Our commitment to challenging inequitable systems.

The Newsletter’s New Rhythm:

A Feminist Newsletter will now land in your inbox bi-monthly (don’t worry—we’ll still pack it with the same rigor and heart!). No action needed: we’ll keep publishing as we roll out these changes.

Why the shift?

Cities are on the frontlines of the climate crisis, and a feminist urbanism lens is non-negotiable in shaping a just urban future. We’re evolving to meet this moment—with more tools, more urgency, and more ways to connect.

Stay tuned for our first video drop and updates on the relaunch. And to those hitting the streets this weekend: Happy protesting! Let’s keep pushing for the cities—and planet—we deserve.

Finally I leave with a message from one of my guiding lights Dr. Mark Naison:

“I don’t feel like I am living in a dictatorship. I feel like I am living in a toxic moment in U.S. History produced by would be dictators who can’t achieve their ultimate goal, but are willing to inflict unimaginable pain in a desperate effort to get there!
Do not concede defeat.
Do not concede anything.
They are not going to win.
Organize. Protest. Vote.”

With warm solidarity,

Lo (& Kimberly)

Food banks and food give giveaways are a cruel farce that weakens SNAP, WIC and other programs that give people autonomy and choice

As the United States grapples with persistent inflation, economic inequality, and President Trump’s red pen which has halted $500 million worth of food bank deliveries, the hunger crisis, in the still often hypersegregated urban cities, has intensified, revealing a stark contrast between corporate welfare and austerity measures targeting vulnerable
