Yes, another United States is possible. This phrase borrows from the World Social Forum’s slogan, Another World IS Possible.

The World Social Forum (WSF) which is an alternative to the World Economic Forum. WSF “embodies global civil society, bringing together organizations, advocacy campaigns, and social movements that seek solidarity” regardless of political boundaries.

Though I will take a caveat with the root of the phrase as I deeply believe—the government IS us. It does not have to be a tool of oppression; it holds the potential for liberation—yet we must demand it. We must be active Civic Citizens and Planners. While governments have often served imperialists and oligarchs, that isn’t its purpose, nor is it inevitable.

The shift away from New Deal-era governance to today’s reality began with the Powell Memo in 1971. This memo—a corporate manifesto—outlined a strategy to erode trust in government and pit us against each other. Once divided, we became defenseless.

This same effort pushed the false idea that corporations should organize our society instead of democracy. But that vision is wrong. Powell was wrong. Reagan was wrong. Bush was wrong. Clinton was wrong.

Another United States IS Possible

No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, you can’t be satisfied with the status quo—or to use lay terms, what is happening right now—not if you work for a living. Whether you labor in a home, an office, a classroom, or a construction site, you are part of the working class. And you deserve better.
