The 2020 U.S. census showed that there were 17,342 married same-sex couple households (9,145 lesbian couples) and 10,701 unmarried same-sex couple households in New Jersey.

A recent study by Oreffice and Sansone in the journal of Labor Economics women in same-sex relationships have commute times longer to their workplace and work more hours than women in different-sex relationships.

According to the study these disparities are even more pronounced when couples have children.

When looking at race and ethnicity this disparity holds with white and Latine women, for Asian and Black women the commutes are less or the same for same sex couples.

The fight against the penalty for not being married to a cisgender white man continues.
